Artwork roosts
in Pediatrics Unit
One of Mercy’s newest
art installations can be
found in the third floor
Pediatrics Unit.
The patient care
area features work by
Iowa City author and
artist Claudia McGe-
hee from her 2010
book,
Where Do Birds
Live?
The colorful im-
ages include birds and
bird-watching, and
each patient room is
identified by a particular bird—goldfinch, blue jay,
cedar waxwing or chickadee.
Claudia uses a distinctive technique called
scratchboard, which resembles a woodcut. The
natural world is a favorite subject of Claudia’s,
whose books include
A Tallgrass Prairie Alphabet
(2004)
and
A Woodland Counting Book
(2006).
The works in Mercy’s art collection are made pos-
sible by the Mercy Hospital Foundation.
