OUR MISSION
Mercy Iowa City heals and comforts
the sick and works to improve
the health of the community
in the spirit of Jesus Christ
and the Catholic tradition
of the Sisters of Mercy.
BUILDING CRANES
and traffic bypasses at
Mercy Iowa City’s Market Street location
are an outward sign of inside renovations.
Now through 2016, Mercy is renovating
all inpatient care units into a single-room
environment, with three patient units
already complete.
Single patient rooms offer many advan-
tages for patients, such as:
Improved care
Greater privacy
A quieter and safer environment
Other important features that will be
included in the building design are:
Built-in technology that allows nurses
to spend more time at the patient bedside
Spacious patient bathrooms
Natural lighting of common areas
Modern appearance that incorpo-
rates warm accents and soft curves and
lighting
Just as in a private home, the hospital’s
physical surroundings can affect comfort,
efficiency and state-of-mind.

Feel better
To treat a cold or the flu:
Get plenty of rest, especially
when you have a fever. Rest
helps your body fight infection.
Consume lots of fluids,
such as water and clear soups,
but avoid alcohol. Fluids help
loosen mucus and help prevent
dehydration.
Gargle with warm salt water
to ease a sore throat. Throat
sprays and lozenges may also
help relieve the pain.
Use saline nose drops to help
loosen mucus and moisten the
tender skin in your nose.
Take an analgesic—such as
aspirin, acetaminophen or ibu-
profen—to help relieve aches
and pains and to reduce fever.
Never give aspirin to children
or teenagers.
