IT’S BEEN SAID
that time heals all wounds. In real-
ity, though, there are some wounds that need more than
time to get better—they need expert medical attention.
at’s the case with venous ulcers. Fortunately, Mercy’s
Wound and Vein Center provides care for these and other
serious wounds.
A TROUBLING SORE
Venous ulcers are painful, shallow
wounds that usually develop on the legs—o en around
the ankles—and are slow to heal. ey occur when
blood pools in the legs, causing pressure to build in the
veins. Being overweight; standing or sitting too long;
and having an injury, blood clot or surgery are some
common causes.
A venous ulcer will feel tender, look red at the bottomand
ooze uid. e skin around the wound may be discolored.
EARLY TREATMENT IS BEST
E ective
treatments are available in Mercy’s
Wound and Vein Center. One such treat-
ment is radiofrequency vein ablation; it
uses radiofrequency energy to close o a
troublesome vein. The procedure is
minimally invasive and is done on an
outpatient basis.
Successfully treating leg ulcers and
other serious wounds increases the quality
of life for individuals, who have o en
been homebound because of their
condition.
e medical director of Vein Services
in the clinic is Nathan Schneider, MD,
FACS, and the clinic director is Judy
Bennett.
